Low Fire Hazzard Cable Terminology

Cable terminology is important when defining cable usage and safety. Having an understanding of cable terminology can help define genuine low smoke cable from cheaper varieties that may not meet recognised safety standards.

So What do terms like 'low smoke, 'zero halogen',  'flame retardant' and 'low corrosive gases' really mean?

Low Smoke Emission

When traditional PVC cables are exposed to flame, they burn and give off thick black smoke. This smoke can obscure escape routes and causes asphyxiation, reducing peoples’ ability to respond in an emergency and can quickly result in panic. For more information see this article on the Approved Cables Initiative website.

Low Corrosive Gas Emission

Although often invisible, PVC emits aggressive hydrochloric acid gas when burnt, This can cause corrosion and failure of electrical equipment, corrosion of building structures and significantly incapacitate those trying to evacuate the burning building.

Flame Retardant

This test assesses a single cable and it's behaviour when directly exposed to flame. To pass this test the cable shall self extinguish the flame within a specified short distance when the source of flame is removed. In a practical event this means that a cable can reduce the spread of fire in a building. See Wikipedia for more information.

Reduced Flame Propagation

This test assesses cables that are commonly found bunched together in service routes in public buildings and how they respond to flame. Bunched cables such as installed on a cable tray or service duct in a building can be a significant source of flammable material and passing this test will ensure that cables will limit the spread of the flame and shall all self extinguish when the flame source is removed.

All products carrying the AFUMEX quality logo comply with the highest standards of quality and performance in terms of reaction to fire.
